AFC Bournemouth face a trip to Morecambe in the EFL Cup second round

AFC Bournemouth have been drawn to face Morecambe FC away in their second round clash in the EFL Cup.

The second round draw was completed for the competition on Wednesday night as the majority of the Premier League clubs prepare to enter the competition. The Cherries will pit themselves against the side that finished 21st in Football League Two last season at the Globe Arena on Tuesday 23rd of August.

Last 16 appearance for the Cherries last season

The South Coast side were victorious at this stage of the competition last season when they put four goals past Hartlepool United away from home in a cup run which sent them to the fourth round. The Cherries faced a tough trip to Anfield for that clash and for the second time in the 2015/16 season Eddie Howe’s men left Liverpool having narrowly been defeated 1-0.

The Shrimps book their place in round two after nine goal thriller

Bournemouth’s next opponents in this competition came through a first round thriller away at Rotherham, coming through with a 5-4 win after extra time. Morecambe’s star man in that match was Jack Dunn, a loan signing from Liverpool who netted a hat trick to help his team stun the Championship side.

Head to Head

Bournemouth and Morecambe have met on four previous occasions, all in League Two, with the Cherries winning their last clash 1-0 at home back in March 2010. Earlier on in that season the Shrimps did put five past the South Coast side in what remains Morecambe’s only victory over the Dorset club.

Of course a lot has changed since these clubs last met. While Morecambe remain in the division, Bournemouth’s fairy tale story has seen them rise to the top of the pyramid in English football, competing in the Premier League for the second successive season and Howe’s men will be the firm favourites to secure victory at the Globe Arena.
